The Greenfield Organization (G.O.) was founded in 1968 by a small group of concerned citizens who organized to improve recreational facilities in the community. The agency was incorporated in 1971. From 1968-70, the Greenfield Organization embarked on a successful campaign of fundraising and lobbying agencies providing services to the community. With the help of the health & Welfare Planning Association, the G.O. was able to secure a two-year grant from the Hillman Foundation. Subsequently, the Greenfield Organization wrote additional proposals to the Diocese of Pittsburgh for the remodeling of an old building to house a community center and to the Sarah Scaife Mellon Foundation for the continuation of programs. It was a combination of these grants which provided the agency with the flexibility to develop a multi-service program and become a United Way Agency in 1974. The mission of the Greenfield Organization is to aid in maintaining and enhancing the spirit, viability and economic and social stability of the Greenfield Community by: (1) Initiating, managing, and facilitating programs and services; (2) Providing a forum for advocacy and social action and (3) Informing residents of current issues and actions important to the community. In the past thirty-two years, the Greenfield Organization has successfully worked in the area of community development towards the construction of the Magee Recreation Center, the Greenfield Senior Center, and the rehabilitation of the Swineburne Bridge and many of Greenfield's recreational facilities. In late 1994, the G.O. in cooperation with Action Housing and the Department of Housing and Urban Development undertook the construction of 40 units of elderly housing that was completed for occupancy in the Spring, 1996. Additionally, the G.O. has established a wide variety of programs and services in the areas of social development, informal education and recreation.
